SENSITIVE SKIN BADDIE

Updated: Aug 3, 2023

I tried different body moisturisers so you don't have to

As mentioned in the previous post I get dry, sensitive skin in winter and I know many people struggle with the same issue. I also know the struggle of finding the perfect body moisturiser that is moisturising without being oily, or causing rashes and redness. Heavy moisturisers containing lipids and humectants as the dominant ingredients are best to combat dry skin.

Lipids are fatty acids that are insoluble in water, they form part of cell membranes thus creating a protective barrier on our by controlling what goes in and out of our skin cells. You know your moisturiser has lipids if it contains triacylglycerides, waxes, ceramides, glycerophospholipids, sterols. Humectants are water absorbing substances that attract and keep moisture, and increase the solubility of active ingredients in skincare. You know that your moisturiser has humectants if it contains glycerine, hyaluronic acid, propylene glycol.

When trying out these different moisturisers I considered affordability,

absorption, oiliness, hydration level. Note all the moisturisers are fragrance free.

I hated this lotion and I tried the body cream as well just to make sure my judgement was not being clouded by my own biases since I generally hate lotions. My purchase was initially influenced by the chamomile, since it is a calming ingredient I thought it would help my sensitive skin. But the lotion was too thin, it absorbed quickly but it did not hydrate my skin.

Growing up I never used aqueous creams because although they hydrated my skin, they also made me sweat excessively and cause unnecessary irritation. However, I was pleasantly surprised with this aqueous cream which leads me to believe that the problem had been fragrance.

This lotion was more moisturising than the Dawn moisturiser but it still did not thoroughly satisfy my hydration expectations, it was not lasting on the skin. It is preferable as a hand lotion which you would reapply frequently throughout the day.

This takes the number one spot for me. It contains urea which is highly moisturising and has antifungal and antibacterial properties.

5. Nature's Nourishment Creamy Petroleum Jelly

The size of this cream is too small, it is appropriately priced but it is still too small. I love petroleum jelly, it is the holy grail moisturiser although it can leave the skin oily so I would not use it for a prolonged period. It contains vitamin e which helps prevent wrinkles, fade scars and soften skin. I liked the consistency and its quick absorption. It left my skin feeling hydrated throughout the day.

Cheers to soft, hydrated skin.
