GYM MEMBERSHIP FOR WHO?

I have found that the best way to ensure that I stay fit and in shape is to have some exercise equipment that I keep at home, even when I have had a gym membership it has proven helpful when feeling unmotivated, the dumbbells will be in your bedroom or lounge screaming "Use me!!!". Or when overwhelmed by life's happenings. Or when traveling. So I will be sharing a few basic pieces of equipment you can buy to create your very own at-home gym.

There are the obvious ones, the yoga mat and dumbbells. A yoga mat is especially useful if your place has any flooring other than carpet. It provides cushioning and can be used a perimeter to improve form. Dumbbells are so versatile, they can be used for lower and upper body workouts as well as core exercises. With dumbbells you would want to have a set of light weights such as 1,5 kg-2kg for pilates and barre workouts and a heavier set of weights such as 5kg-10kg. Please remember the dumbbell weights you choose depends on your level of fitness and strength, it's you vs you more especially so since you would be working out in your home presumably alone; safety first, heroism later.

Next I would recommend:

  • ankle weights

  • resistance bands

  • sliders

  • pilates ball

These are great if you're always on the move as they are light and won't take up much space in your luggage. When choosing your ankle weights I would again recommend you to remain cognisant of your abilities and not jeopardise your safety. Ankle weights can also be used on your wrists or held in your hands to use for an arm or back workout if you lack dumbbells. Sliders are really great because you can work with them on any surface and slider exercises can target you upper or lower body while really challenging your balance, so they are versatile and versatility is key.

Everybody knows resistance bands, everybody loves resistance bands. How can you not, they are an inexpensive way to activate your glutes in preparation for an great booty pump session.

As for the pilates ball, it is a necessity if you enjoy low impact workouts that challenge muscles that you don't necessarily always activate. For travel you can just let out the air then blow it back out once you want to use it at your destination.

If you really want to challenge yourself in your own space, far away from creepy stares or people trying to mansplain exercise unprovoked, then I would suggest you also acquire an EZ bar and a varied assortment of weight plates. This bar is shorter than the regular weight lifting bar so it can work in any space however small or oddly shaped.

As for where to buy the items mentioned above I would suggest Game and Mr Price Sport. Use the tag #hotgirlfit to share your progress in your fitness journey.

Cheers to competing with yourself and only yourself
