CURATED NOT FRUGAL: 5 Questions to Ask for Buying Less and Maximizing Versatility

After multiple failed attempts at a NO BUY year have been made there has been a need to pivot low buy, intentional purchases instead. As people who love style and dabble in fashion trends it can be difficult to resist especially if you're blessed with the luck of always stumbling upon amazing deals on quality clothes. However, as environmentally and future conscious fashion lovers, we strive to look stylish in the present while not squandering all our money on fashion or contributing to issue of over consumption. Enter the curated closet comes into play - a collection filled with cohesive items that are the best quality we can afford.

Here are some questions to ask before purchasing items to add to your fashion collection to avoid having nothing to wear while having a closet full of clothes.

CAN I THRIFT IT?

Thrift ambassadors put your hands up! Thrifting the most affordable way to find high quality, well designed, unique garments. So whenever you can spend a Saturday popping into the different second hand shops in your city - you might just get lucky. Wearing or using second hand items no longer carries the stigma it used to, just wash it, and it's as good as brand new.

HOW IS THE QUALITY?

Of course the ideal would be to shop natural fabric compositions like cotton, linen, silk but they are not always accessible. Fast fashion is the most accessible, affordable way the dress well and as much as commentators are hate on it, it is possible to find long lasting fast fashion items that will not need to be replaced every year.

DOES IT WORK WITH MULTIPLE ITEMS THAT I ALREADY OWN?

Each of us are building a fashion collection - the world is your runway, life is your inspiration and you are the most celebrated creative director of your lifetime. A fashion collection is a group of carefully chosen clothes and accessories that all fit together. Look for items that can be styled in various ways to create different looks. You should be able to create at least 10 outfit variations using the piece you are considering adding to your collection, variation can mean switching just one item. Your clothes should earn their keep.

WOULD I WEAR IT IF IT WAS NOT TRENDING?

Trends are so much fun, really, but we do not have to try every trend that's popping off at the moment. The trends you dabble in should still fit in with your style and aesthetic so you are not left with unworn clothes when the hype has died down. It should be items you would wear without discomfort or doubt, even if no one else was wearing them.

IS IT PRACTICAL?

Your collection should majorly consist of the most style-forward version of items that can be worn in your everyday life. We love impossible heels but they should not make up 10 of the 20 heels you own unless you are attending events every day of the week. Are you comfortable in the item? Does it fit your lifestyle? Is it versatile? Versatility is key when building a curated closet. Pieces that can transition from day to night, or from casual to formal, offer more value and flexibility in your wardrobe.

By asking these questions before making a fashion purchase, you can make more informed decisions that align with your personal style, values, and goals. Let's make intentional choices that empower us to look and feel our best while saving our money and minimizing our impact on the planet.
